If you have ever shown a horse, you know it takes a lot of work to get them prepared. Bathing, grooming and other tasks take a lot of time and must be done right. Nothing is more aggravating than getting a horse clean and ready to go, only to have them get into something and become dirty again. On white horses, this can be even more of a problem because it is so difficult to get them completely clean.
For touch-ups and spot cleaning, baking soda can be the best solution to getting a white horse white again. It can even help tackle larger spots, and because it is readily available and inexpensive, can be a great solution for those last minute cleanups. You can also take a container of it to your shows to help keep that white looking great through the entire show.
To use baking soda, sprinkle a generous amount on the dirty area, and rub it in vigorously with a stiff brush. Next, take a soft brush and brush the baking soda back out. In most cases, one application is all it takes because the dirt will adhere to the baking soda and brush away cleanly. If not, another application may be necessary. Unless the stains are really stuck on, this is usually all that is necessary to return your white horse to white.
A spray bottle of diluted dish soap can usually take care of any stains baking soda won’t handle, so keep that on hand too, along with a soft rag to scrub with.
